Visit Ghana and alongside your local private guide, you will explore Elmina Castle, search for giant pangolins and forest elephants in Kakum National Park and have the opportunity to receive your own traditional African clan’s name from a village chief in Kumasi. The best part is that you will explore the country completely on your own schedule all the while taking comfort in the fact that each Kensington Tours experience includes round the clock travel support.
(1) Accra is the capital and most populous city of Ghana. Bustling with activity and growth, the nation’s administrative, communications and economics center lie here. The city promises a range of attractions, from exhibits of Ghana’s heritage to a window into its artistic and cultural sectors. A modern metropolis, the tree-lined streets and public buildings are well maintained and welcoming to the curious tourists. You can create a customized trip to Accra or any of the primary cities in Ghana.
(2) Elmina is situated on a south-facing bay on the Atlantic Ocean coast of Ghana, lying west of Cape Coast. It was the first European settlement in West Africa and now has a population of around 20,000 people. The town grew around São Jorge da Mina Castle, built by the Portuguese in 1482. It was Portugal’s West African headquarters for trade and exploitation of African wealth. The original Portuguese interest was gold, but this later expanded to include tens of thousands of slaves channeled through the trading post of El Mina. The location of Elmina made it a significant site for reprovisioning ships headed south towards the Cape of Good Hope on their way to India. The Dutch West India Company captured it in 1637; in subsequent centuries it was mostly used for the slave trade. The city remained in Dutch hands until 1872, when it was sold to the English. You can create a customized trip to Elimina should you desire.
(3) Kumasi is a city in southern central Ghana. It is located near the Lake Bosomtwe, in the Rain Forest Region about 250 km (by road) northwest of Accra. Due to large gold deposits that have been mined in the area, Kumasi has been among the wealthier cities in Ghana. The city rose to prominence in 1695 when it became capital of the Ashanti Confederacy. Parts of the city, including the Royal Palace, were destroyed by British troops in the Fourth Anglo-Ashanti War of 1874. It remains a royal city, although since independence the role of king has been mainly symbolic.

DAY 5 – KUMASI: IT’S ALL ANCIENT HISTORY

Kejetia Market
Kumasi is located in the heart of the historical Ashanti Region of Ghana. It is here where the day will be spent exploring the various important monuments, locations and points of interest allowing you to familiarize yourself with the culture of this ethnic group. Begin with a visit to the historic Manhyia Palace Museum housed in the former residence of Ashanti royalty, where you will obtain in-depth information on the legacies of the regal Ashanti Kingdom. The Palace played an important part in Ghana’s history and dates back to 1700. Inside the Museum view some of the ancient relics and artifacts passed down through generations of local families. The Museum also holds a rich collection of Ashanti traditional dresses, jewelry, furniture and musical instruments. Next, visit one of the largest markets in West Africa, the Kejetia Market. It is a wonderful place to connect with the locals and see their daily lives firsthand. Merchants often come to Kumasi from surrounding countries to trade and sell their goods at Kejetia. Your expert guide will lead you through this vibrant marketplace filled with everything from vegetables to sandals, beads, leather goods, pottery and clothing. Upon conclusion of your experience you will be transferred back to your hotel.
This evening, enjoy time at leisure to explore at your own pace, or relax at your hotel.

DAY 6 – KUMASI TO ELMINA: ENROUTE

Ridge Royal Hotel
Ndonkor Nsuo Slave River
Today transfer from Kumasi to Elmina with your private guide. A moving stop by Assin Manso allows you to trace back the steps of your ancestors as they made their harrowing journey to the Americas. Assin Manso Ancestral Slave River Park was one of the largest slave markets during the infamous trans-Atlantic slave trade. It was the final link in the slavery route from northern to southern Ghana. The Ndonkor Nsuo (the Slave River), is where the captives were oiled, fed and bathed in waters of their native land one last time. Here, they were meant to rest for several days or weeks as the traders knew that they could fetch higher prices when they appeared healthy and strong.
An impactful experience awaits as you embark on a private guided tour of the notorious Cape Coast Castle. Learn and watch history unfold in front of your eyes as you gain a better understanding of the slave trade in West Africa. The largest of its kind, this Castle was built by the Swedes in 1653 and was later taken over by the British. Walk the path of the enslaved as your guide takes you through each of its sections. The Castle also houses the West African Historical Museum established by the Smithsonian Institute in collaboration with the Ghanaian Government in 1994. It is filled with artifacts, stories and photos that allow you to visualize the agonizing journey of the innocent men and women who were forced to leave their land behind.

DAY 7 – ELMINA: CULTURAL IMMERSION

Spend the day with your dedicated Ancestry expert to uncover the sites and locations of your heritage, as determined in your Research Report.
Feel a true connection with your ancestors as you visit a settlement inhabited by the members of your ethnic group. The location of today’s experience will be determined based on the specific findings from your Research Report. During this interactive tour you will get a chance to visit a Ghanaian homestead and meet a family that shares your ethnicity. An emotional highlight of your day will be the opportunity to participate in a traditional Naming Ceremony, a memorable event blending spirituality and music. You will also learn about a traditional local dish significant to your tribe. The perfect way to round off the day is the chance to share this home-cooked meal with your hospitable hosts. If your family is part of the Akan group, some of the local delicacies you may sample today are fufu, light soup, and the mouthwatering ampesi with kontomire stew. This fortification was the first European structure built in Sub-Saharan Africa, and it is the oldest of the West African slave trade route castles in Ghana. It stands as a stark reminder of one of humanity’s most horrific periods in history. A solemn experience awaits as you venture into its grim hallways and dungeons with your guide. Near Trinity is the National Library, perhaps worth a quick pop-in to admire their Genealogist Room. On foot, discover the rich maritime history of nearby Dublin Docklands district, home to the Ancestry office, offering a chance to step in to bring your research journey full circle. Finally, visit the state-of-the-art EPIC, the Irish Emigration Museum, where your guide will help you explore global Irish history and identity through stories and interactive exhibits. Conclude with a return transfer to your hotel.

DAY 3 – DUBLIN:  IT’S ALL ANCIENT HISTORY

Enjoy a private tour in the company of a private vehicle, and driver-guide exploring the ancient site of Newgrange – one of the great wonders of western ancient civilization that needs to be seen close up to be fully appreciated. Predating the Pyramids, it is a complex chamber that is perfectly aligned to catch the morning sun on the winter solstice. There are two other major tombs at Knowth and Dowth, both equally impressive and different in character. Nearby is the River Boyne where the famous Battle of the Boyne took place. The land here is lush and full of ancient and medieval ruins that are testaments to Irelands great heritage.

Make a stop in the town of picturesque town of Cahir, where you can catch views of its 12th century Cahir Castle, one of the country’s largest. Continue to Cashel, where you’ll visit the grand Rock of Cashel, a fortified medieval religious complex gifted to the Church in the 13th century, easily one of Ireland’s most spectacular attractions. You’ll then visit the Titanic Experience where you’ll receive a boarding card upon check-in, detailing the life of one of 123 final passengers who boarded the Titanic from Cobh.
